Video Chat Not Working? Fix Your Camera, Mic, and Next in 60 Seconds
You open a random video chat and your camera stays black. Or your mic is silent while video works fine. Or the Next button does nothing at all. Annoying — but most of these problems take less than a minute to fix, with no tech skills needed.
Here is the short version, then the details per browser and device.
The 60-second fix
- Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar and set camera and mic to Allow.
- Close other apps using the camera or mic — Zoom, Meet, Teams, Skype.
- Reload the page. If Next still does nothing, clear cookies for this site and reload again.
Still unsure whether the problem is the browser or your device? Run our free webcam and mic test first: live camera preview with resolution and FPS, plus a mic level meter and a 5-second record-and-playback check. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is recorded or uploaded.
Allow the camera in Chrome, Safari, or Firefox
Most “camera not working” cases are just a blocked permission. At some point the browser asked, “Allow camera and microphone?” and the answer was Block — or the default is set to block. The fix is the same everywhere: find the site permission and flip it back to Allow.
Chrome (desktop and Android)
- Click the lock or camera icon on the left of the address bar.
- Find Camera and Microphone and set both to Allow.
- Reload the page.
If you blocked the site earlier, you may need to reset it: open Chrome’s site settings for the page, set camera and mic back to Allow, then reload.
Safari (Mac and iPhone)
- On Mac, use the top menu: Safari → Settings for This Website, then set camera and mic to Allow.
- On iPhone, also check the system level: Settings → Safari (or Chrome) and make sure camera and microphone access is enabled.
- Reload the page.
Firefox
- Click the lock icon in the address bar.
- Set camera and microphone to Allow (if you previously clicked “Not Now,” this is where you undo it).
- Reload the page.
Mic works nowhere, but the camera is fine?
The camera and the microphone have separate permissions, so one can work while the other stays blocked. This is the most common “they can’t hear me” cause.
- Check the mic permission in the address bar — it must say Allow, not just the camera.
- Close Zoom, Meet, Teams, or Skype if any of them is running. Only one app can hold the mic at a time.
- Check your system sound settings to confirm the right microphone is selected (built-in vs. headset vs. USB mic).
- Test it: open the mic test, speak normally, and watch the input level bar. Hit the 5-second record button and play it back — if you hear yourself there, your mic is fine and the problem was the chat tab’s permission.
Next matches nothing? Reload vs. clear site data
When the Next button does nothing, the camera is rarely the culprit. It is usually the connection or stale saved data.
- Reload first. A plain refresh fixes most stuck matching states.
- If that fails, clear site data. Delete cookies and cached data for this site only (no need to wipe your whole browser), then reload.
- Still stuck? Open a fresh tab, restart the browser, and check your connection speed. A slow or unstable connection can make matching time out silently.
Phone vs. desktop: where to look first
On your phone, permissions exist in two places — the system and the browser — and both must allow the camera and mic.
- iPhone: Settings → Safari (or Chrome) → allow camera and microphone, then also Allow inside the browser’s address-bar prompt.
- Android: Settings → Apps → your browser → Permissions → allow camera and microphone.
- Close other apps holding the camera, and update the browser to the latest version.
On desktop, the usual suspects are a competing app or an outdated browser.
- Quit Zoom, Skype, Meet, or any recording app before joining.
- If you use an external webcam, unplug it and plug it back in.
- Update to the latest browser version.
- Try a second browser: if it works there, the first browser’s site settings are the problem, not your device.
Still broken? Tell us what you see
If you tried everything above — including the webcam and mic test — and it still fails, we want to help. Email hello@aleatoria.app and mention:
- Your browser and version (Chrome, Safari, Firefox…) and your device (iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac).
- What exactly happens: black screen, “camera blocked” message, silent mic, or Next doing nothing.
- What the test tool showed (camera preview OK? mic level moving?).
That tells us in one mail whether it is a permission, a device, or a network issue — and we will reply with the next step.
FAQ
Why is my camera a black screen?
Either the browser is blocking the camera or another app is already using it. Set the camera to Allow in the address-bar icon, close Zoom/Meet/Skype, then reload.
Why does the chat say “camera blocked”?
You clicked Block earlier, or the browser blocks by default. Open the site settings via the lock icon, set camera and mic to Allow, and reload the page.
Why does my mic not work when the camera does?
The microphone has its own permission. Set it to Allow in the browser, make sure no other app holds the mic, and confirm with the mic test that your input level moves.
Why does the Next button do nothing?
Usually a slow connection or stale site data, not the camera. Reload first; then clear cookies for the site and reload. A fresh tab or browser restart helps too.
Does this work the same on my phone?
Yes. The steps are the same, but on phones you must allow the camera and mic in both the system settings and the browser prompt.
